Retro vibe, good food at diner north of Colorado Springs | Dining review
The only thing missing at Rosie’s Diner in Monument were food orders yelled to the cooks at the pass-through in verbal shorthand, or diner lingo; otherwise things here were so authentically retro it was almost like stepping back in time.

The Menu
The full menu is served no matter the time of day. If you’re craving a burger at 8 a.m. or an omelet at 1:30 p.m. it’s available. Traditional breakfast fare, salads, burgers, sandwiches and “Diner Favorites” are always available.
The latter includes pot roast, meatloaf, fish and chips and more. Cold, hot and open-face sandwiches run the gamut from classic Monte Cristo to a triple-decker club. As for breakfast, name it and it’s likely on the menu.
Critic’s Tip
Sit back and enjoy the diner vibe. The booths all have small jukeboxes and for a quarter you can pick two oldies. Go for it!

On the Table
Selecting our entrees from the entire menu was difficult. Even in the morning, some items typically reserved for lunch were tempting like the Memphis BBQ burger ($15.29) and the California Club croissant ($14.49). So, we did a combination of breakfast and lunch items.
The Classic BLT ($14.79) wasn’t a stretch at 9 a.m., but what an impressive sandwich! Talk about bringing home the bacon — the numerous slices practically spilled out from between the slices of toasted sourdough. (Other bread choices include white, wheat and rye.) This, along with thick tomato rings, lettuce and just the right amount of mayo, lived up to the “classic” reference.
The sandwich came with a choice of sides, including fries, onion rings, coleslaw and frings. We chose the latter: a combo of fries and onion rings.
Chicken and waffles ($15.99) was an easy choice. Rather than a large piece of fried chicken, the waffle was topped with bite-size pieces dusted with powdered sugar. The waffle had a crispy exterior but was airy inside. The result was a combination of savory and sweet flavors (thanks to the addition of syrup).
From the three Benedicts, we opted for the Desperado ($15.69). This was a massive serving of grilled ham, basted eggs, house-made green chili, melted pepper jack cheese and a large gooey dollop of sour cream. Two English muffins were hidden beneath everything. The chili, with pieces of pork, had just the right amount of kick without overpowering everything else. Pico de gallo, refried beans and hash browns were also crowded onto the plate. The beans were lackluster; they may have come from a can. The spuds, however, were the ideal combination of crispy and creamy.
The Venue
At first glance, there was an element of kitsch thanks to the long, stainless-steel exterior. This impression gave way to appreciating the authentic elements: the above-mentioned jukeboxes, Formica table tops, stainless-steel counter and round stools, booths and tile work.
Afterthoughts
I was initially skeptical about what to expect foodwise at Rosie’s. I soon learned there was no cause for concern. Our meals were well prepared, hearty and simply enjoyable. Service was excellent thanks to the friendly, knowledgeable staff. If not for the many patrons on their cellphones, it was close to feeling like another era.
