Original chairs from City Auditorium go on sale as part of renovation

A piece of Colorado Springs history could be yours, as the original seats from the City Auditorium are for sale beginning Friday.

AVA Presents, the company that has partnered with Colorado Springs to manage the renovation of the historic auditorium in downtown Colorado Springs, announced Friday that it would sell the building’s 1,500 seats.

The City Auditorium was built in 1923 and has been used for around a century of concerts, sport competitions and community events. The seats are on the second floor of the auditorium, surrounding the main floor on three sides.

“They are an important part of the history in these walls. There are a lot of memories in these chairs. And the craft and care that went into making them is really amazing,” said Jesse Morreale, AVA founder and the leader of the auditorium’s renovation.

For the last year, Morreale has been the managing operator for the building and working on renovations to reopen the auditorium around January 2027.

The chairs are sorted into four categories of pricing, depending on their condition. The seats that are in the best condition and still include some of their original upholstery are being sold for $150.

Chairs with more damage and wear but are still ready to use or easy to repair are going for either $50 or $100. Morreale said that the largest number of chairs fell into the $50 category. Hundreds of other chairs will be given away because of the heavy damage they’ve received over the years.

The proceeds from the sale will go to the City Auditorium Gift Trust Fund to assist with the preservation of the building.

Instead of adding new chairs to replace the ones being sold, the auditorium will add bench seating to the upper levels. Morreale said the benches are more accessible and are already familiar to concertgoers who have been to Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the Mission Ballroom in Denver.

Workers were also making improvements in other parts of the auditorium on Friday. In the front hallway off Kiowa Street, crews were preparing the walls and ceiling for new paint. Morreale said that the backstage renovations were largely finished and that once the chairs were out, construction would move into the main area.

“We can’t get to that ceiling over there with how the chairs are right now. We can’t put scaffolding over the chairs and that wouldn’t make sense if we are getting rid of them anyway,” Morreale said.

The chair sale is being run through AXS.com and can also be accessed from the website for the renovation, CityAud.com. Once purchased, the chairs will be available for pickup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays from Aug. 3 to Aug. 10.
