Freedom, justice and democracy will be the themes on display for residents in the Colorado Springs area the week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Pikes Peak Diversity Council and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Preservation Society hold this event every year in the Pikes Peak region to bring people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds together to honor King’s vision of equality, justice and nonviolence.
The celebration begins with an “All Peoples Breakfast” at the Antlers Hotel in downtown Colorado Springs with doors opening 7:30 a.m. Monday. The breakfast is scheduled 8-10 a.m., with Isaac Newton Farris Jr., nephew of King, the keynote speaker.
Following the breakfast there will be a “Unity March” at 10 a.m. around the Antlers Hotel quad. It was originally planned to begin at the Antlers Hotel and move to Acacia Park but due to the forecast for extreme cold temperatures it was changed. The march is open to the public.
In the afternoon, there will be a youth panel discussion led by Farris from 2:30-4 p.m. at the Colorado Springs School in the Louisa Performing Arts Center located at 21 Broadmoor Ave.
On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Farris will lead another panel discussion at Pikes Peak State College from 4-5:30 p.m. at its Centennial campus, 5675 Academy Blvd.
On Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 3-5 p.m., Farris will open up his discussion to the community with a panel at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Roaring Fork Hall, Kettle Creek Event Venue located at 4785 Stanton Road.
