5 hot picks for streaming on this August weekend

Peacock’s “Married at First Sight” is exactly what the title promises: After putting their trust in professional matchmakers, strangers meet for the first time at the altar and say “I do.” Then, they have four weeks to live together, navigate their new marriages and decide whether they want to make it work or call it quits. When the matches work, it’s surprisingly sweet. When they don’t, well, it’s pretty much exactly the beautiful disaster you’ve signed up to watch. — April Borjon

“The Drama” is now streaming on HBO, and it asks a pretty heavy question: What would you do if your partner confessed their worst secret — that they once almost became a school shooter? Starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, the drama follows a relationship thrown into chaos when a shocking confession forces the engaged couple to spiral. Is almost doing something terrible enough to change how you see someone forever, or does the act of not following through change things? Find out by pressing play. — April Borjon

Sterling Point
Ella Rubin, left, and Bo Bragason in “Sterling Point.” (Sabrina Lantos/Prime Video/TNS)

I love a young adult novel for comfort, so now I’m about to immerse myself in the new YA series, “Sterling Point,” which just debuted on Prime Video. The story follows 17-year-old Annie, a typical teen living with her twin brother and adoptive father in New York City. When she inherits her mysterious grandfather’s island in Canada, it’s off to a new life with new friends, new romances and new family secrets. — Jennifer Mulson

Like usual, I’m late to the party. The Charleston, S.C.-based reality show, “Southern Charm,” debuted on Bravo in 2014. A dozen years later, I’m finally catching up with these Southern men and women creating drama in their personal lives for all the world to see. The show was renewed for its 12th season earlier this year. Watch it on Peacock. — Jennifer Mulson

Lanterns
Aaron Pierre, left, and Kyle Chandler in “Lanterns.” (John Johnson/HBO Max/TNS)

I thought last year’s Superman movie was pretty good, and I really liked “The Batman” from 2022. Otherwise, I’ve been just fine skipping the onslaught of DC movies (including “Supergirl,” this summer’s flop apparently). But when it comes to TV series, DC has been soaring. Example: “The Penguin,” streaming on HBO Max. Now comes “Lanterns,” also streaming on HBO Max. The green-ringed hero — much more scruffy and down to Earth than the guy in the comics — and his hero-in-training are drawn to the scene of a murder in a small town where nothing is as it seems. — Seth Boster
