Hapke’s Hortum has outgrown its Old Colorado City storefront.

After nearly four years on Colorado Avenue, owner Clay Hapke relocated the boutique houseplant and supply shop to 101 N. Tejon St., a move he said gives the business more room to grow and a better environment for its customers and collection of indoor plants.

“I kind of became a little stagnant in Old Colorado City and wanted to try downtown,” Hapke said.

The new storefront is about twice the size of the former location and features south-facing windows, rather than north-facing. These features provide more consistent natural light, creating better growing conditions for many of the shop’s tropical houseplants.

The previous shop’s narrow, shotgun-style layout also often became crowded, he said, while the downtown space allows customers to move through the store more comfortably.

Hapke focuses primarily on indoor houseplants and aims to carry a wide selection sourced from independent retailers rather than rare collector plants that may be less recognizable, more expensive and more difficult to care for. Some of the offerings include African violets, pothos, bugonias, lucky bamboo and cacti.

“I try to have a nice variety,” he said.

With a meander around the shop, you’ll find plenty of surprises.

A separate room houses plants that require more specialized care, including alocasias and carnivorous varieties. Take a look up and walls are colored with collage prints by Colorado Springs artist Kelly Clark. Hapke also sells jewelry made by local artisans and sources many of the shop’s plants through independent retailers.

The shop also hosts workshops focused on building terrariums and moss frames. Hapke also plans to introduce bonsai classes where participants can pot and decorate their own juniper bonsai.

Hapke’s Hortum downtown location opened at the end of June and is open noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Closed Tuesdays.
