Colorado wildfire roundup: Aspen Acres fire containment falls slightly
Crews working the Aspen Acres fire successfully knocked down some hot spots and established fire lines in recent days, as containment fell from 71 to 68% on Wednesday.
That work was done on the southern edge of the fire, including an area near Rye that firefighters are calling the “chicken foot.” The fire has seen very little overall growth in the past week and a half, standing at 101,961 acres burned in Pueblo and Custer counties south of Pueblo as of Wednesday morning.
Wednesday also brought a change in leadership. A Type 3 incident management team has replaced Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3 as the need for resources on the fire lessens.
Crews have been recovering and removing equipment, such as hoses and pumps, that is no longer needed on the fire line. Firefighters are also conducting suppression repair, clearing logs and limbs, moving slash piles and performing chipping operations.
Heat and smoke will continue to be a problem for an “extended duration” due to heavy concentrations of dead and down fuels.
Nearly all evacuation orders were lifted as of Wednesday evening. Three zones under an evacuation warning across Custer and Pueblo counties remained in effect.
Here’s an update on other wildfires burning across the state:
Willow fire
Location: Lake County, west of Leadville
Last official update: 7 a.m. Wednesday
Size: 7,196 acres
Containment: 67%
Cause: Human
Pre-evacuation statuses for zones 21-C, 6-A and 4 have been removed, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday morning. The decision is based on the latest assessments, but the Sheriff’s Office still warns the public to remain aware of changing conditions.
Gold Mountain fire
Location: About 2 miles northeast of the town of Ouray
Last official update: 1 p.m. Wednesday
Size: 39,507 acres
Containment: 89%
Cause: Undetermined
Forest Service Roads 864 and 858 remain closed south of Cimarron, incident management officials said Wednesday morning. Firefighters have managed to address lingering heat sources of the fire’s northeast edge, increasing containment. Suppression repairs are still the primary focus.
Ferris fire
Location: Glade area north of the town of Dolores
Last official update: July 29
Size: 64,881 acres
Containment: 97%
Cause: Undetermined
The Ferris fire remains stable, with any heat expected to stay within containment lines, according to incident officials. The July 29 update from officials was expected to be the final update unless conditions change.
While some of the areas impacted by the blaze have reopened, residents and visitors are advised to remain careful and alert when entering burned areas.
“Please use caution, especially on roadways where heavy machinery could be working just around the corner,” officials wrote in a social media post.
