More than 30,000 expected to attend Hill Climb Fan Fest in downtown Colorado Springs

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Fan Fest is set to ignite excitement Friday along seven blocks of Tejon Street in downtown Colorado Springs.

The Fan Fest comes two days before Sunday’s “Race to the Clouds,” as cars and motorcycles speed up Pikes Peak for the 96th year.

More than 30,000 people typically attend the Fan Fest, now in its 17th year and sponsored by Budweiser and Toyo Tires.

“This year’s event will have some of the largest displays and booths ever. Sponsors are bringing in semi trucks to display their products,” says festival Operations Director Daniel Rodriguez.

The Red Bull Motocross Team will perform aerial stunts, revving 75 feet at a height of 35 feet. Racers will display their vehicles and sign autographs, while fans enjoy music, food and drink.

The annual Firefighter Chili Cook Off will feature 12 booths, as firefighters compete for prizes for the best green chili, red chili, booth design and most money raised.

Last year, the contest raised more than $7,540 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Fans can sample chili for one $1 ticket, or buy a bowl for five tickets.

“Our celebrity (chili) judges this year (are) David Brown from Fallen Heroes Tattoo, Drew Smith from Cumulus Radio, Cliff Cage from the radio station 98.9, and Katie Pelton from KKTV. We will also be having one of the MDA families be a judge as well,” says Christopher Jones of the Colorado Springs Professional Firefighters Association.

“It’s a full evening of great entertainment for all ages,” says Mike Moran, a spokesman for the Hill Climb. “It’s one of the most unusual events in Colorado, but it’s wonderful.”
