9 arrested, 76 traffic citations issued after street racing crackdown in Colorado Springs
The Colorado Springs Police Department conducted a street racing enforcement operation earlier this month, resulting in nine arrests and 76 citations being issued.
The operation was meant to target car meets in private parking lots, which often turn reckless and result in illegal racing and maneuvers like doughnuts, according to a department press release issued Monday.
Colorado Springs police collaborated with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Patrol for the coordinated reckless driving crackdown. In all, 54 personnel from the three agencies issued arrests and citations, according to the release.
Police report contacting 138 community members during the operation — 22 were issued warnings, 33 were issued speeding tickets and nine were arrested for driving under the influence, felony eluding and on outstanding warrants. 12 additional citations were issued for non-traffic related offenses.
The street racing enforcement operation preceded the Saturday death of a person who was killed by an apparent street racing incident in east Colorado Springs. At least two suspects have been arrested; Julio Lopez and Christian Bustillo were arrested Sunday on charges of vehicular homicide, speed contests and failure to report a crash, according to the police department.
“Roads in El Paso County must be safe for everyone,” El Paso County Sheriff Joe Roybal said. “We remain firmly committed to our community, and coordinated operations like this one help hold accountable those who purposely engage in activities which are reckless and endanger others.”
Both the Colorado Springs Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office have ongoing efforts to address reckless driving and street racing in Colorado Springs, according to the news release.
