WR Jaylen Waddle to make Broncos debut on ‘Monday Night Football’

ENGLEWOOD — Jaylen Waddle used the word “excited” over and over while chatting with reporters ahead of his Broncos debut.

The veteran wide receiver couldn’t stop smiling following Saturday’s practice at Broncos Park. Waddle is projected to be one of quarterback Bo Nix’s top targets when Denver opens the regular season Monday night against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

“It’s going to be exciting. A good group of guys. We’ve been working hard and training hard. Training camp went well,” Waddle said. “It’s a hard stadium to play in, especially on the Monday night season opener against a great team. It’s going to be good. It’s going to be a good way to start the season.”

The Broncos traded a first-round pick to the Dolphins for Waddle. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound wide receiver with blazing speed and elite start-stop footwork lived up to the hype in training camp. His first and only preseason catch went for 35 yards against the Packers.

“He’s had a real good camp and he’s smart,” coach Sean Payton said Saturday. “I think the interesting thing about Week 1 is on each side of the fence here, the Chiefs and the Broncos, there are some new players. … That early part of the game as to how they’re being deployed is important. Who is playing in the slot for them? How are they rotating the runners? Those types of things.

“The same thing would apply to where Jaylen is at.”

Waddle had three 1,000-yard receiving seasons over five years in Miami. He does not enter each season with personal benchmarks in mind. His only goal is “consistency,” Waddle said. He is ready to showcase what the Broncos can do with new offensive coordinator Davis Webb calling plays for Waddle.

“I’m excited to see Davis put his spin on things,” Waddle said. “For y’all to see the type of stuff that we’ve been working on. Just the great mind that he is.”

Briefly

The Broncos have all active players available Monday against the Chiefs. Wide receiver Marvin Mims (foot) was a full participant in all three practices this week. … The Chiefs have ruled out defensive back Chamarri Conner (knee) and offensive tackle Josh Simmons (back) against the Broncos. … The Broncos offensive and defensive linemen were not present during the media viewing portion of Saturday’s practice. Denver adopted the policy last season for the final practice before games. Payton said: “You’re really just looking at time they’re on their feet.”
