OC Davis Webb readies for play-calling debut | Broncos notebook
ENGLEWOOD — Davis Webb begins his journey as the Broncos offensive play-caller on the biggest stage.
Monday Night Football against the division rival Chiefs in Kansas City.
Webb, promoted from Broncos quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, admits that emotions will be high leading up to kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium.
“It’s going to happen, and I think that’s a good thing,” Webb said following Thursday’s practice at Broncos Park. “I think our staff is prepared, and I think that our players are prepared. We’ll let it rip when it’s go time. But right now there are butterflies for everybody. I think it’s like a player getting hit for the first time or the first completion. Getting that first play call in, and we’ll get rolling after that.”
Webb has personal ties to the Chiefs.
He was a former college teammate of quarterback Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech. Webb was the starting quarterback in 2014 before injury thrust Mahomes into the role. Mahomes beat out Webb as the starter in 2015, and Webb transferred to the University of California, Berkeley.
“I don’t think I’m going to text Pat until pregame. I’ll hit him up,” Webb said Thursday. “That’s been kind of our tradition on game weeks. We always talk for a good 15 minutes. We were great teammates. … Him and I are still really, really close. I love Pat. He’s like my younger brother because him and I were the only (Texas Tech) scholarship quarterbacks at the time.”
Webb also played for the Giants in 2017 when Steve Spagnuolo, now the Chiefs defensive coordinator, was the interim head coach in New York. Webb called Spagnuolo “one of the best defensive coordinators in this game’s history” and that he will “be a tough challenge for us out of the gate.”
Injury report
The first Broncos injury report of the regular season gives the team a clean bill of health.
The only player listed was wide receiver Marvin Mims. He was a full participant in Thursday practice following a foot injury suffered in the preseason finale against Minnesota.
“Hard to tell (at first),” Mims said regarding his injury. “I knew it was something. I was hoping it wasn’t too much. But at the end of the day, it was the best news we could possibly get out of the situation. So, very fortunate for that.”
Robinson hype
Second-year outside linebacker Que Robinson has created buzz after a strong training camp and preseason. The absence of Jonathon Cooper (commissioner’s exempt list) should create more opportunity for Robinson starting on Monday night against Kansas City.
“It does not seem like he’s in year two. It seems like he’s in year six,” edge rusher Jonah Elliss said. “He’s one of those young guys that doesn’t act young or play young. He plays like he has a lot of experience. I’m super excited to watch him play and dominate.”
Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto added: “I’ve seen a big jump from Que. He was always a guy that was really talented. He has it all in his game when it comes to speed and power. Now, he’s getting the opportunity to show it more often with the bigger role that he’s going to have.”
Briefly
Two Chiefs players did not practice Thursday, according to the injury report: DB Chamarri Conner (knee) and OT Josh Simmons (back). … Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is planning for the best version of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. The three-time Super Bowl champion is returning from a knee injury. Joseph said: “In my opinion, he wouldn’t play if he couldn’t be himself.” … Offensive coordinator Darren Rizzi reacted to kicker Wil Lutz being named a team captain. Rizzi said: “He deserves it. He’s a guy that has a really, really good feel for the game. He has a really good feel for the locker room.”
