Gas prices in Colorado Springs remain elevated, diesel hits record high in city; relief may be coming
Gas prices in Colorado Springs remain high after a record-breaking Labor Day weekend, data from AAA Colorado shows.
On Thursday, the average for a gallon of gas in the Springs was $4.3174, AAA said. One year ago, the average cost was $3.0802. Even one week ago, prices were slightly cheaper, averaging $4.1495 per gallon.
The $4 per gallon mark is seen as a “pain point” for many consumers, The Gazette previously reported. Gas prices have climbed since the start of the U.S. and Israel’s war against Iran, which has disrupted trade through the Strait of Hormuz.
Over the Labor Day weekend, the national average rose to $4.14, according to The Associated Press, shattering the previous record for the holiday period of $3.82 set in 2012. On Thursday, the national average was $4.2770.
Diesel prices also remain elevated — climbing to a record level in Colorado Springs. The average Thursday in the Springs was $5.7228 per gallon, the highest average price on record and up more than 65 cents from a week ago, according to AAA. One year ago, diesel was $3.4674 per gallon, the motoring club reported.
High diesel prices may cause elevated prices elsewhere, as increased transportation and production costs are passed on to consumers.
But there’s some hope on the horizon as summer shifts to fall and winter and seasonal price drops may set in to bring relief to consumers at the pump.
