Two identified in deadly Colorado Springs crash as fatalities continue to rise
Two people killed in a fatal crash along Marksheffel Road Aug. 31 have been identified, bringing this year’s traffic deaths to at least four more than last year.
Driver Francine Shumake, 53 and passenger Brenda Baker, 61, were killed at the scene of the crash, located south of East Gate Street along Marksheffel. The collision occurred at around 1:36 p.m. on Aug. 31 and involved two sedans.
Preliminary findings indicate that a Toyota sedan was driving south along a curve when it veered into the northbound lane and struck a Chevrolet sedan, according to a Wednesday news release from Colorado Springs police.
Police said the occupants of the Chevrolet were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office identified Shumake and Baker as the occupants of the Toyota two days after the crash.
Their deaths are the 42nd and 43rd traffic-related fatalities in Colorado Springs this year. There were 39 around this time in 2025.
The Police Department’s Major Crash Team unit is still investigating the crash. Anyone with information can contact Colorado Springs police at 719-444-7000. To remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 1-800-222-8477.
