Does AFC West still belong to Chiefs… or is it Broncos’ to lose? | 2026 Broncos Preview

Kansas City strung together nine straight AFC West titles before the Broncos broke the Chiefs’ stranglehold on the division last season.

Whether Denver’s breakthrough last season was a changing of the guard or a blip in the Patrick Mahomes era will be determined this season in what’s become an increasingly competitive division.

Here’s where each team stands to start the season:

Denver Broncos

Coach: Sean Payton, fourth season

Last year: 14-3, lost in AFC championship

Over/under wins: 9.5

Key additions: WR Jaylen Waddle, RB Jonah Coleman

Key departures: DL John Franklin-Myers, LB Dre Greenlaw

Outlook: The Broncos won’t be sneaking up on anyone after narrowly missing out on a trip to the Super Bowl even without Bo Nix under center against the Patriots. Nix is healthy after a couple of offseason ankle surgeries and has even more firepower after Denver traded for Waddle. As long as Davis Webb’s first year as play-caller goes smoothly, the Broncos should be thinking Super Bowl or bust.

Kansas City Chiefs

Coach: Andy Reid, 14th season

Last year: 6-11, missed playoffs

Over/under wins: 10.5

Key additions: RB Kenneth Walker III, CB L’Jarius Sneed, S Alohi Gilman, QB Justin Fields,

Key departures: CB Trent McDuffie, RB Kareem Hunt, RB Isiah Pacheco

Outlook: Patrick Mahomes reportedly is on track to play in Week 1 after tearing an ACL in December. Walker provides another dynamic to Kansas City’s inconsistent run game, and Chris Jones still anchs a formidable defensive line. The Chiefs get to open the season at home against the Broncos on Sept. 14, a game that will reveal a lot about Kansas City’s direction this season.

Las Vegas Raiders

Coach: Pete Carroll, second season

Last year: 3-14, missed playoffs

Over/under wins: 5.5

Key additions: QB Kirk Cousins, QB Fernando Mendoza, C Tyler Linderbaum, CB Taron Johnson, OG Spencer Burford, DE Kwity Paye, LB Nakobe Dean, LB Quay Walker

Key departures: QB Geno Smith, DE Tyree Wilson, LB Devin White, LB Elandon Roberts, WR Jakobi Meyers

Outlook: The biggest question facing the Raiders is who starts at quarterback. Mendoza was the No. 1 pick in the draft, while Cousins offers way more veteran experience. Cousins clearly performed better in the preseason. With solid quarterback play and a breakout year from second-year running back Ashton Jeanty, Las Vegas should improve on last year’s abysmal record, but it’s far too early in the rebuild to start thinking about the playoffs.

Los Angeles Chargers

Coach: Jim Harbaugh, third season

Last year: 11-6, lost in Wild Card round

Over/under wins: 9.5

Key additions: C Tyler Biadasz, G Kayode Awosika, G Cole Strange, DT Dalvin Tomlinson,

Key departures: WR Keenan Allen, LG Zion Johnson, C Bradley Bozeman, DE D’Shawn Hand.

Outlook: The key skill position players are back on both sides of the ball — quarterback Justin Herbert, running back Omarion Hampton and wide receiver Ladd McConkey on offense and linebacker Khalil Mack and safety Derwin James on defense — but the Chargers added some muscle on the interior of both lines. The hope is that’s enough to get out of the Wild Card round for the first time in Harbaugh’s tenure in Los Angeles.
