With Davis Webb making Broncos coordinator debut vs. Chiefs, memories linger of Texas Tech days with Patrick Mahomes

On the wall of his office at Florida Atlantic University, head football coach Zach Kittley has autographed jerseys of Patrick Mahomes and Davis Webb.

It was a dozen years ago that Kittley was the assistant quarterbacks coach at Texas Tech and first got to work with both signal callers. Now he’s thrilled to see how far both have come.

Mahomes has become a legendary quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, leading them to three Super Bowl wins and having twice been named NFL MVP. And while Webb didn’t have much success as an NFL quarterback, he has become an up-and-coming coach, now being offensive coordinator for the Broncos at age 31.

“It is really cool to see where they both are now,’’ Kittley said from his office. “Davis is one of the top offensive minds right now and I have no doubt he’ll probably be a head coach in 2027. And then, clearly with what Patrick is doing, he’s the best player on the planet. And to realize that those two guys were in the same quarterback room together brings back some great memories.”

In 2014, Webb was Texas Tech’s starting quarterback as a sophomore before he sustained a season-ending ankle injury in the eighth game against Texas Christian and Mahomes took over as a freshman. In 2015, Mahomes beat out Webb to be the starter and Webb transferred after that season to play one final college year at California.

Next Monday night, Webb, promoted by head coach Sean Payton last February after three seasons as Denver’s quarterbacks and given play-calling duties, will make his debut as offensive coordinator at Kansas City. For the Chiefs, there is a good chance Mahomes, after his 2025 season ended with a torn ACL suffered Dec. 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers, will be back under center.

“We’ll chuckle in pre-game about it,’’ Webb said of his first game in his new role being against Mahomes’ Chiefs. “Then we’ll kind of get on to the game.”

After Webb left Texas Tech, he remained close to Mahomes. Both ended up being selected in the 2017 NFL draft, Mahomes going No. 10 in the first round to the Chiefs and Webb No. 87 in the third round by the New York Giants.

They have seen each other plenty from when Webb played in the NFL from 2017-22 and during his last three seasons as a Broncos assistant.

“Pat was a great teammate, first of all,’’ Webb said. “We were really close in college and we’re still close today. … The coaching schedule gets a little bit more busy than the players’ schedule in the offseason, but we’ll connect as much as we can through texts and DMs (direct messages).”

Meanwhile, memories linger about when the quarterbacks were teammates in college under pass-happy head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

After starring at Prosper (Texas) High School, Webb got to Texas Tech in 2013 and was in line to be the starting quarterback in the opener as a freshman until Kittley said he got mononucleosis in fall camp and was weakened. That’s when fellow freshman Baker Mayfield, now a star for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ended up being the starter in Week 1 after coming to the Lubbock school as a walk-on.

Mayfield had some injury issues and Webb ended up playing a bit more that season than Mayfield. Webb appeared in 10 games, throwing for 2,718 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. After Mayfield announced he would transfer to Oklahoma before the Holiday Bowl, Webb became the undisputed starter and threw for 403 yards and four touchdowns in a 37-23 Red Raiders win over Arizona State.

The starting job was Webb’s to open 2014. In the first eight games, he threw for 2,539 yards with 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions before suffering his season-ending injury. Mahomes then came on and finished the season by throwing for 1,547 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. In the finale against Baylor, he threw for a whopping 598 yards and six touchdowns against Baylor.

“After that, we had a huge battle all through spring and fall camp (in 2015), and Patrick just outshined him a little bit (to) where it was Patrick’s job,’’ said Kittley, who was initially a Texas Tech assistant from 2013-17 and later was the Red Raiders’ offensive coordinator from 2022-24 before taking the Florida Atlantic job. “Those guys were fierce competitors and they both wanted to win the job. … But after Pat won that job, Davis kind of turned into a little bit of that coach as well that year. He really tried to be a leader off the field and helped give Pat some pointers.”

Le’Raven Clark, a Texas Tech tackle from 2011-15 who later spent nine years in the NFL, also was impressed with how Webb handled matters after being beaten out by Mahomes and spending 2015 as a backup.

“Typically, most guys that lose a job they’re side-eyeing the guy in front of him,’’ Clark said. “But Davis was still doing all he could to help Patrick. Davis has always been great about having a great attitude for sure.”

Clark said Webb immediately became popular with the offensive linemen after he showed up at Texas Tech.

“His freshman year, when he started playing, we loved having Davis,’’ Clark said. “He was a great player, a great leader and the O-line loved him for sure. He made sure we were taken care of. He would take us out to dinner and all kinds of things and that was before NIL, so he wasn’t getting paid.”

Clark said a favorite spot Webb took the linemen to was Chuy’s, a Tex-Mex restaurant. So that begs the question: Did Mahomes take the linemen out to dinner?

“No,’’ Clark said. “But in his defense, he was young and just thrown (initially) into the job. But Pat was great. We all loved Patrick, too.”

Clark wasn’t around for Mahomes’ final Texas Tech season of 2016, when he threw for 5,052 yards with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and emerged as a sure-fire first-round draft pick. Meanwhile, Webb had a big-time season at California, throwing for 4,295 yards with 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

While Mahomes became the Chiefs starter in his second NFL season of 2018 and won his first Super Bowl the following year, Webb became a career backup. Playing for the Giants in 2017, the New York Jets in 2018, the Buffalo Bills from 2019-21 and the Giants again in 2022, Webb didn’t get into a regular-season game until 2021. His only other NFL appearance came when he started the final game of 2022, with the Giants locked into their playoff seed.

But those with Webb at Texas Tech long had figured he would become a coach.

“We knew it was in him definitely,’’ Clark said. “We used to call him ‘Little Kliff Junior’ because he was pretty much shadowing Coach Kingsbury all the time. If it didn’t work in football (as a player), we felt it would work out in the coaching realm for him for sure. He was always extremely smart and very knowledgeable and had a football mind.”

Kittley said he “absolutely” believed Webb would become a coach.

“He would kind of come in on Sundays and Mondays and he would almost give us what he thought the game plan should be,’’ Kittley said. “He would script 20 to 25 plays that he really liked.”

Now, Webb is in charge of scripting plays for the Broncos, and that will start for real against the Chiefs. While Webb won’t go directly against Mahomes’ side of the ball, knowing how explosive the Kansas City quarterback is certainly could impact Denver’s play calling.

Since Webb left Texas Tech, he said he regularly has rooted for Mahomes to do well.

“I’d root for him most weeks,’’ Webb said. “A little bit more when I was playing with the Bills or the Giants or the Jets. We didn’t have (the Chiefs) in the same division (the AFC West). He’s a heck of a quarterback and I’m glad he’s healthy. I expect him to have another great year.”

Webb at least has had some bragging rights over the last three seasons, with the Broncos having gone 4-2 against Kansas City. It must be said, though, that Mahomes didn’t play in two of the Chiefs’ losses.

Now, Webb will have an even bigger role as he tries to pin another defeat on his good buddy’s team.
