Unbeaten Rampart football goes wire to wire in shutout road win over Widefield

Rampart football has already bested its record from last season.

After a two-win season last year, the Rams are undefeated through three games, their most recent victory being a 48-0 shutout over host Widefield on Thursday night. Part of Rampart’s success so far has been an elevated determination after last season’s outcome.

“Last year, we went 2-8 and people were down on us,” said junior Kingstin Trujillo-Maher, who scored two touchdowns. “They weren’t really believing in us this year, and so we took that as a challenge.

“We just have to keep pushing and keep training for it.”

Several players showed off on the Gladiators’ home field, including Trujillo-Maher, who opened scoring with a touchdown just a minute and 30 seconds into the contest.

Just a few minutes later, a costly Widefield (1-2) turnover resulted in a touchdown by quarterback Havoc Zermeno to put the Rams up 14-0.

Two minutes into the second quarter, the other quarterback junior Johnny Martin ran in for a touchdown, but the PAT kick was blocked. Still, with five minutes left in the half, Martin connected with senior wide receiver Brant Landrum for a comfortable 27-0 lead.

A 40-yard pass from Zermeno to Trujillo-Maher put senior Daniel Lingley in position to score the Rams’ fifth touchdown in the final seconds of the half.

“Everybody knew we were putting it up, but we had to keep our calm and make sure that we stayed humble, because if you don’t stay humble, then they’ll come right back at you,” Trujillo-Maher said. “We had to make sure we kept that mindset tonight.”

With a 34-0 lead, Trujillo-Maher broke loose early in the third quarter for a huge run to the end zone, extending Rampart’s lead to 41-0.

Unable to get past a stout defense, Widefield quarterback Brody Gizzi was intercepted at the start of the fourth quarter, resulting in a touchdown by Ethan Barajas. A running clock ended the game in front of a quiet Widefield crowd.

“We had a really good week,” Martin said. “We were focused in practice with a short turnaround, added some stuff and it worked really well. The guys felt good tonight, and it clicked.”

Thursday’s game was Rampart’s first shutout since 2024, and it’s not taking the win for granted. The team has a “24-hour mentality” break before it is focused on its next game, a matchup with Sand Creek on Sept. 18.

“I’m super proud of them,” coach Rob Royer said. “It was a short week, and I’m proud of them answering the bell and grinding through the game. Every year we have to figure out what team we are. We are still figuring out what the 2026 team is.”
