Applications open for three positions on the Pikes Peak Library District Board
Three positions on the Pikes Peak Library District Board of Trustees are open for applications.
The terms for board President Aaron Salt and Vice President Erin Bents will expire at the end of the year. Julie Smyth, who served as the board secretary, stepped down at the end of May and her seat has since remained vacant.
All three positions will be filled this fall through the application process.
The library trustees are joint appointments that are approved by both the El Paso County Board of County Commissioners and the Colorado Springs City Council.
Salt and Bents could potentially serve a second time. Library board members can serve for a maximum of two five-year terms.
Salt and Bents were controversial appointments when they were first considered by the City Council in 2021 because of concerns about politicizing the library, based on their openness to removing or relocating “objectionable” material and hesitancy to ask voters for a tax increase to fund the district.
Both appointees failed to receive the two-thirds majority of councilmembers during the initial vote in November 2021 and were appointed during a second vote in February 2022.
