The 1984 Colorado Open champion Willie Wood made a hole-in-one on the fifth hole Wednesday at Green Valley Ranch to shoot a first-round 66 to be tied atop a crowded leaderboard at Inspirato Colorado Senior Open.

Wood’s win in 1984 was at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen.

The Edmond, Okla., resident is tied with Steve Holmes, John Balfanz, Rob Shields and Rafael Gomez after the first day of the annual event’s 27th year.

Wood also had four birdies to make the turn with a front-nine 30. He got as low as 8-under but made three bogeys, including back-to-back on the 17th and 18th holes, to end at 6 under.

He has played on the PGA, Nationwide and Champions tours during his professional golf career.

Steve Jurgensen and Omar Uresti are two shots back at 4 under.

Seven players are tied for eighth place at 3 under including amateur Keith Humerickhouse of Parachute, Denver resident Brian Cooper, former Buff Thomas Kalinowski and former PGA Tour player Skip Kendall.

Thursday’s second round begins at 7:30 a.m. with the top 50 plus ties advancing to Friday’s final round where the winning professional will take home the $15,000 first-place prize of the $80,000 purse.
