Stan Kroenke expands sports empire, buys MLB’s Los Angeles Angels
Kroenke Sports and Entertainment is batting 4 for 4 when it comes to ownership of teams in the big-four American sports leagues.
KSE completed the ownership cycle by agreeing to purchase a controlling share of the Los Angeles Angels from the Moreno family on Tuesday afternoon. Now, the Kroenkes own the Angels and Los Angeles Rams (NFL) alongside the Colorado Avalanche (NHL) and Denver Nuggets (NBA).
Kroenke reportedly purchased the Angels for $4 billion, an MLB record sale.
“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” KSE owner and chairman E. Stanley Kroenke said in a release. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”

The Kroenkes purchased the Nuggets, Avalanche and Ball Arena in one transaction back in 2000. KSE has owned a portion of the Rams since 1995 but became the majority shareholder in 2010. NFL rules prevent owners from controlling teams in the league’s other markets, so he handed control of the Nuggets and Avalanche to his son Josh to complete the sale. KSE later became sole owners and relocated the Rams from St. Louis to Los Angeles where it built SoFi Stadium and developed the surrounding area.
“The transaction meaningfully deepens KSE’s presence in one of the largest sports and entertainment markets in the United States,” KSE said in a release.
“The Angels acquisition extends this footprint south into a market of more than 3 million residents with its own distinct civic identity, corporate base and tourism economy. The addition of the Angels to the KSE portfolio creates the opportunity for a year-round Southern California calendar of events.”
KSE’s portfolio also includes English Premier League club Arsenal, Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids and the National Lacrosse League’s Colorado Mammoth.
Arsenal just won the EPL for the first time in more than 20 years. The Nuggets won the franchise’s first championship in 2023, while the Avalanche and Rams won the Stanley Cup and Super Bowl in 2022. The Rapids and Mammoth have also won championships under KSE’s control. The Angels won their only World Series in 2002.
The other side of the family, the Walton-Penner Group, purchased the Denver Broncos in 2022 and recently purchased a 40% stake in the Colorado Rockies.
Prior to purchasing the Angels, KSE already owned the largest portfolio of professional sports teams. According to a CNBC report, KSE’s teams were valued at more than $21 billion, beating out the Jones family, which runs the Dallas Cowboys and Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, which controls the NFL’s Washington Commanders, NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, NHL’s New Jersey Devils and Premier League club Crystal Palace.
