Dolphins poach Joly, Taylor as Broncos assemble 17-man practice squad
ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos had hoped to sign both tight end Justin Joly and cornerback Reese Taylor to their practice squad, but that didn’t happen.
The two players, waived Sunday by Denver, both were claimed Monday by the Miami Dolphins.
Joly was a fifth-round pick by the Broncos in April out of North Carolina State. Taylor had spent much of the past three seasons with Denver, most of it on the practice squad.
“If he’s not claimed, (Joly’s) coming back,” Denver coach Sean Payton said after Monday’s practice at Broncos Park. “We felt strongly that he’s coming back to our practice squad, and yet it’s hard to predict.”
The Broncos did not claim any players off waivers a day after they set their initial 53-man roster Sunday in preparation for the Sept. 14 opener at Kansas City.
The Broncos assembled their 17-man practice squad Monday. The NFL limit is 16, but outside linebacker David Agoha has an international exemption due to being a native of Nigeria.
All other members of the practice squad are players let go by the Broncos on Sunday. The list includes four vested veterans who did not have to go through waivers including fullback Adam Prentice, long snapper Mitchell Fraboni, offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton and tight end Lucas Krull.
Prentice and Fraboni would have been on the 53-man roster had they not agreed to start the season on the practice squad to give Denver the chance to keep additional young players. The expectation is they will be elevated for the first three games and then be signed to the 53.
“There’s a trust,” Payton said of having had several vested veterans on minimum contracts in recent seasons agreeing to that maneuver. “Financially, it doesn’t change anything. I would say the only downside is what you tell your mother and your friends.”
Other key additions to the practice squad were rookies Miles Scott at safety and Red Murdock at linebacker, both seventh-round picks. An important undrafted rookie who signed back was wide receiver Kolbe Katsis, who averaged 31.2 yards in the preseason on six kickoff returns and 16 yards on three punt returns.
The squad also includes outside linebacker Johnny Walker Jr., who was on injured reserve all of last season as a rookie after suffering a foot injury in training camp.
“I think this preseason was huge for me,” Walker told The Denver Gazette. “My body feels good. I’m looking to just keep on improving.”
Players waived by Denver who didn’t join the squad included running back Jaleel McLaughlin, who played the past three seasons for the Broncos, and rookie linebacker Taurean York, who had received the highest contract guarantee of any Denver undrafted signee. He got $300,000 guaranteed in addition to a $25,000 signing bonus.
McLaughlin and York had not as of Monday night committed to other teams. A source said defensive tackle Jordan Miller, waived Saturday by the Broncos, agreed to join Miami’s practice squad.
