Kickin’ It with Kiz: Only question is when Shedeur Sanders takes over as starting quarterback in Cleveland
Shedeur Sanders is the best quarterback on that Cleveland Browns team. Whether or not Sanders is a good NFL quarterback is yet to be seen.
— M.M., surfing the net goofy style
Kiz: In a reminder that what Cleveland does best as a football franchise is Browns down its leg, Deshaun Watson was inexplicably named the starter at quarterback for the opening game. What’s the over/under for Sanders taking the job away from Watson? The knuckleheads here at Kickin’ It Headquarters are betting Cleveland makes a switch at QB no later than Halloween.
It was definitely worth retiring Sanders’ No. 2 jersey at CU! But I’ll buy you a drink when Shedeur wins an NFL playoff game, OK?
— Greg, Fort Collins
Kiz: If Sanders had been lucky enough to be mentored in the NFL by a coach as savvy as Sean Payton, he might already have at least experienced losing one NFL playoff game. Now, that being said, there’s no way Payton and Sanders could peacefully coexist. They just don’t approach football the same way.
I read in your recent column the Rockies are raising season-ticket prices by 14 percent on loyal customers who have invested their money in the team since 1993. Is that known as the Worst Team in the MLB Tax?
— Michael, crying in the basement
Kiz: As one of the loyal season-ticket holders irked by the price hike told me: You know what’s the best thing about regularly attending Rockies games at Coors Field? On most nights, you’re guaranteed of seeing one legit major league team on the diamond.
With a lockout that will delay the start of the 2027 MLB season almost certain, it seems like it would be a good time for the five guys you wrote about with season tickets in Section 134 to bow out after almost 35 years of loyalty. I really thought getting a new Monfort in the driver’s seat of the franchise and fresh money from Broncos ownership would make a difference for the Rockies. Silly me. In some ways it’s bittersweet for baseball lovers in Colorado, but I think it’s time to say no more to the Monfort brothers.
— Debbie, fool her once …
Kiz: Since purchasing the Broncos, the Walton Penner Group has done great things for the on-field product in Empower Field at Mile High. But the new ownership has also raised ticket prices an average of roughly eight percent a year over the past three seasons. Ouch. Broncomania is an addiction, and the Walmart empire is exploiting it to the hilt.
Can you imagine watching every Rockies home game as a season-ticket holder? Pure torture!
— Bill, too scared to look
Kiz: I feel the pain of season-ticket holders asked to shell out nearly $25,000 for five seats at Coors Field. I get paid to watch the Rockies. And it’s still pure torture.
And today’s parting shot reveals why it really hurts to be a Rockies season-ticket holder. You can’t use your seats on a Tuesday night? Well, better hope the Wretched Rox are playing the Dodgers or Cubs. Or else you’re going to eat those empty seats for dinner.
I wouldn’t go to a Colorado Rockies game for free.
