Suspect arrested after allegedly setting Colorado Springs apartment complex on fire twice

Colorado Springs police arrested Leontra Stewart, 60, on Friday after allegedly igniting an apartment complex on fire twice the day prior, according to a blotter entry from the department.

Around 9 p.m. Thursday, emergency responders were dispatched to a fire at The Peaks at Woodmen Apartment Complex in the 6800 block of Alpine Currant View, resulting in several tenants being evacuated. Colorado Springs police and fire investigators determined the fire was intentionally started near one of the apartments.

Through further investigation, police were able to obtain enough evidence to secure an arrest warrant for Stewart on charges of arson and stalking. However, it was unclear what linked him to the alleged crime. Police say at that time, he was already suspected of setting a fire at the complex earlier Thursday morning.

On Friday, police used some of the city’s 90 automated license plate reader cameras and a drone to locate Stewart’s vehicle at the East Library and arrested him without incident.

Stewart’s bail did not appear to be set by Friday evening, according to Colorado court records.

He has several criminal cases in El Paso County since 2013. That year, he was charged with motor vehicle theft, violating a protection order and harassment across two cases, which were both dismissed by the court.

In 2021, he pleaded guilty in an apparent plea deal to second-degree assault. The district attorney dismissed several charges, including two counts of first-degree kidnapping and amended the charge of attempted first-degree murder.
