Two men charged in fatal Highway 139 hit-and-run
Two men have been arrested in connection with a Monday hit-and-run in Mesa County that killed a pedestrian.
The Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash at around 2:12 a.m. Monday at milepost 1 of Highway 139, CSP said in a news release.
The pedestrian, a 35-year-old man, was sitting in the middle of the northbound lane when a vehicle heading north struck him and dragged him around 130 feet, CSP said.
The vehicle fled the scene.
The man was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later pronounced dead, CSP said. The man’s identity will be released by the Mesa County Coroner pending an autopsy and once next of kin has been identified.
A search for the fleeing vehicle ensued that concluded with the arrests of 48-year-old Aaron MacKinnon and 44-year-old Rusty Vogt in Vernal, Utah, by the Vernal Police Department, CSP said in an updated news release Tuesday.
MacKinnon has been charged with failure to remain at the scene or give information or aid after a crash involving death, and Vogt with accessory — both felonies.
The men were in the process of being extradited back to Mesa County Tuesday, CSP said.
Vogt is scheduled to appear in Mesa County Court Sept. 15.
No court dates were listed for MacKinnon on the Mesa County Court docket as of Tuesday.
