GUEST OPINION: Colorado needs CSU Pueblo now more than ever

Colorado stands at a crossroads. Our economy is evolving, industries are shifting and communities across the state face widening socioeconomic gaps. In this moment, one truth is clear: access to higher education is the single most powerful lever for opportunity and upward mobility. Yet for too many families, college still feels out of reach. That’s where regional comprehensive universities like Colorado State University Pueblo (CSU Pueblo) come in—not just as educators, but as engines of transformation for individuals, families and entire communities.

CSU Pueblo’s mission is simple but profound: access, affordability and student success. Nearly half of our students are first-generation, many from historically underrepresented communities. These students bring resilience and ambition, but they also face real barriers—navigating admissions, managing financial aid and balancing school with work and family responsibilities. We refuse to let those barriers stand.

That’s why CSU Pueblo leads Colorado’s first Direct Admissions initiative, partnering with school districts statewide—including the Denver Metro area—to eliminate the traditional application process. High school seniors with a GPA of 2.3 or higher receive automatic admission, scholarship information and clear next steps—no paperwork, no uncertainty. This is more than a policy change; it’s a promise that college is possible for every student willing to take the leap. Already, CSU Pueblo has signed agreements with more than 15 districts and the impact is immediate: students who might never have applied are now envisioning a future that includes higher education.

The return on investment is undeniable. According to the Colorado Department of Higher Education, college graduates earn $26,000 more annually than those without a degree. Over a lifetime, that difference exceeds $1 million. For first-generation students, that’s not just a statistic—it’s the difference between poverty and prosperity, between surviving and thriving. And CSU Pueblo makes this attainable by admitting more than 90% of applicants and offering robust financial aid and scholarship programs.

But access alone isn’t enough. CSU Pueblo ensures that students graduate with degrees that matter. Our programs in health sciences, cybersecurity, education, engineering and business align with Colorado’s fastest-growing industries, equipping graduates with skills employers need now. In fact, 94% of our graduates are employed or pursuing further education within six months of graduation. That’s impact you can measure—and it’s impact that strengthens Colorado’s workforce and economy.

The ripple effect goes beyond campus. Through partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits and government agencies, CSU Pueblo fuels workforce development, supports small businesses and drives regional economic growth. Our Division of Extended Studies offers flexible degree pathways for adult learners, including Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), enabling students to earn credit for existing knowledge and accelerate degree completion. These efforts meet learners where they are—whether they’re returning to school after years in the workforce or balancing family responsibilities—because education should adapt to life, not the other way around.

Recently, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education recognized CSU Pueblo as an Opportunity College, honoring our commitment to high access and high earnings. These designations confirm what we already know: CSU Pueblo is changing lives.

But here’s the reality—this work requires continued investment and public support. If Colorado is serious about equity, workforce readiness and economic growth, we must champion institutions that deliver on those promises. CSU Pueblo is doing just that.

We’re not just educating students. We’re shaping futures, strengthening communities and proving that higher education can—and should—be a force for good.
