Air Force football special uniforms honor new stealth bomber named for famed raid

The aircraft Air Force football will honor with its 10th anniversary of the Air Power Legacy Series remains in the testing phase, but its namesake is a historical favorite of coach Troy Calhoun.

The Falcons will wear special uniforms honoring the B-21 Raider during the upcoming season, it was announced Tuesday. The aircraft is the Air Force’s new stealth bomber.

The uniforms have a dark gray, black and camo color palette, with reflective details throughout to symbolize the bomber’s technology.

The helmet graphic, when viewed from above, “makes B-21 appear to flying into battle,” an Air Force press release explained.

The jerseys will include emblems from the U.S. Air Force Academy, USAA military personnel support services and Air Force Global Strike Command on the front. The back nameplates read “Power Projection” and “Strategic Deterrence.” The right shoulder carries a full-color American flag, and the left shoulder features a chrome B-21 icon.

“That was surreal seeing that today,” cornerback Mikhail Seiken said of his first glimpse of the special uniforms. “I think it’s going to be really cool in the field.”

This is the 10th year of the Air Power Legacy Series, which launched in 2016 with a sharktooth design that mimicked the look of several aircraft through history.

While the B-21 doesn’t yet have the battle history of some of the themes during the series’ 10-year run — F-16s, B-52s, C-17s, the Tuskegee Airmen and Air Force Special Operations Command have been previously honored — it is named for the raid on Japan led by Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle in April 1942.

Calhoun has referenced Doolittle’s campaign multiple times through the years.

“You remember certain events that really put a surge in our nation and the belief in freedom,” Calhoun said. “That was one of them.

“We were on our heels.”

The B-21 Raider is so named because of the link to Doolittle’s Raiders provided by its capability for long-range and surprise air attacks.

Air Force will wear the uniform when it hosts Navy on Oct. 3.
