85-year-old cyclist killed in Longmont crash
An 85-year-old bicyclist was hit and killed Monday morning by a vehicle on Colorado 119.
The crash happened just before 8 a.m. on Colorado 119 near 83rd Street, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol. The cyclist was traveling southbound on the right shoulder of the highway when he attempted to turn left onto 83rd Street.
As he was moving from the shoulder to the far-left lane, he was struck by an SUV, which was in the left lane, according to CSP. The cyclist, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Boulder County coroner will identify the man pending notification of family and an autopsy.
The driver of the SUV stayed on scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Colorado 119 southbound was closed for several hours following the crash, but one lane was later reopened. Drivers in the area are asked to slow down and avoid the area of the crash if possible.
It’s the same highway that USA Cycling member Magnus White was killed on three years ago. A new law that bears his name recently went into effect.
Magnus’ Law requires officers to offer a voluntary breath test after a crash that kills or seriously injures someone. The test is voluntary; the result or a refusal cannot be used in court.
The law is named for White, 17, a USA Cycling National Team member struck and killed while training on the Boulder roadway in 2023.
His parents, Jill and Michael White, have pushed for reforms after evidence in the driver’s trial showed she had been drinking hours before the crash. She was convicted of vehicular homicide.
Monday’s investigation, led by the CSP vehicular crimes unit, remains open and anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact CSP metro dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference case number VC260299.
