2 sisters-in-law plead not guilty to Colorado Springs shooting that killed teenager
Two sisters-in-law tied to a Colorado Springs shooting that killed a 15-year-old girl said in court Monday that they are not guilty of the crime.
Alexious Barben-Wright, 32, and Alyssa Jaramillo, 21, are both charged with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder after an incident at 3 a.m. March 1 in the parking lot of the Astrozon Plaza shopping center, home to two nearby nightclubs off South Academy Boulevard.
The two entered not-guilty pleas during scheduled court hearings at the El Paso County courthouse Monday afternoon. Barben-Wright and Jaramillo are headed for separate trials that will start in December and February.
One of the victims told investigators that they were driving in circles around the parking lot as they waited for someone to exit a club when they were approached by the two defendants. Another victim claims she heard one gunshot before Barben-Wright climbed into the sedan, hit her in the head and knocked her unconscious for about 10 seconds.
According to the defendants, the incident started after the group of four — three teenagers and one adult — allegedly tried to run over a woman with their sedan, and the two sisters approached the sedan to stop them. Chief Deputy District Attorney Rachael Powell contested the claim during a preliminary hearing.
She showed footage of the incident that she said demonstrates the car the teenagers were driving wasn’t close to the woman.
Eyewitnesses told police that Jaramillo handed her sister-in-law a handgun during an altercation in the sedan moments before the shooting.
Video shown in court showed Jaramillo with a black item in her hand, which Powell claims was a handgun.
The shooting wounded the 15-year-old girl, who died March 7 in the hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries. No further information about the teen victim will be released due to Riley’s Law, which prohibits the release of victim and witness names from criminal justice records in Colorado.
Jaramillo denied any involvement in the altercation to investigators in an interview.
A third passenger in the car that the sisters-in-law arrived in was allegedly not involved in the shooting, according to court documents. In a statement provided to police, she recalled hearing two gunshots after helping a female who was chased and “maced” by someone in a sedan.
After their pleas, Powell revoked the deal left on the table for either defendant. The deal would have them plead guilty to second-degree murder with a prison sentence of 45 to 55 years.
