L.L. Bean opening first retail location in Colorado Springs
One of the United States’ best-known clothing brands will open a retail shop in Colorado Springs later this year.
L.L. Bean, the Maine-based outdoor clothing retailer, is remodeling the former Container Store at the Promenade Shops at Briargate. The Container Store closed in April. The new 13,000-square-foot store at 1925 Briargate Parkway is expected to open in late October.
It will be the second L.L. Bean retail store in the state. L.L. Bean opened its first Colorado store at Lone Tree’s Park Meadows Mall in 2014. The company operates more than 70 retail stores nationwide, according to its website.
A spokesman said the company expects Colorado Springs will be a good fit because the city is home to so many outdoor recreation opportunities and that’s the brand’s main niche — on its website the company says “being outside brings out the best in us.”
“L.L. Bean is an iconic outdoor lifestyle brand, and Colorado Springs embraces that lifestyle wholeheartedly,” said spokesperson Jason Sulham via email. “As a gateway to so many outdoor adventures across the seasons, Colorado Springs is an ideal location.”
Last December, USA Today reported plans by L.L. Bean to open eight new stores this year. In Ann Arbor, Mich., the company is opening a 20,000-square-foot store, while in Chicago it’s planning a 16,000-square-foot store, according to media in those areas.
The Colorado Springs location is about the same size as the Lone Tree store. Both pale in comparison to the 220,000-square-foot flagship campus in L.L. Bean hometown of Freeport, Maine, that will have a grand reopening in September after an extensive remodelng.
But the Springs store will still be people’s gateway to adventure, Sulham said.
“Customers will be able to find everything they need to enjoy the outdoors no matter the season,” he said.
The new store at the Promenade Shops will join the likes of Fjallraven, Columbia and Lululemon.
