DeMar DeRozan reportedly plans to join Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets’ need for another bench wing didn’t last long.

A couple of days after trading Peyton Watson to Cleveland in a sign-and-trade deal, the Nuggets are on the verge of signing veteran free agent DeMar DeRozan, according to multiple reports. He will be on a minimum contract worth $3.9 million next season.

The 37-year-old is entering his 18th NBA season. He’s a six-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selection.

After starting his career with the Raptors, which drafted him ninth in the 2009 draft, DeRozan was sent to San Antonio in the trade that brought Kawhi Leonard to Toronto. From there, the wing continued his career with the Bulls and Kings.

Last season, DeRozan averaged 18.4 points while shooting 49.7% from the field and 32% from 3-point range. He also posted 4.1 assists, 2.9 rebounds and a steal per game. He’s played in 74 or more regular-season games in each of the last five seasons and has never played in fewer than 60 games in a season.

With Denver’s starting five from last season unchanged, DeRozan is in line to be a key reserve for the first time in his career. He’s started 1,252 of his 1,264 career games. All 12 of his appearances off the bench happened in his rookie season.

The Nuggets are back to having 14 of 15 standard roster spots filled after signing DeRozan. That does not include second-round pick Bryce Hopkins, who’s yet to sign a deal or Lonnie Walker IV, who received a contract to attend training camp.
