Broncos sign veteran safety Taylor Rapp, waive linebacker Levelle Bailey with injury designation

Seeking depth at safety, the Broncos on Thursday signed veteran Taylor Rapp.

To make room on the roster, the Broncos waived linebacker Levelle Bailey with an injury designation. Bailey suffered a broken leg in Denver’s 27-7 win at Atlanta last Friday in the preseason opener.

Rapp, who worked out with the Broncos last week, is entering his eighth NFL season. He played for the Los Angeles Rams from 2019-22 and Buffalo Bills from 2023-25. He has gotten into 93 regular-season games, with 72 starts.

Rapp will provide depth behind starters Talanoa Hufanga and Brandon Jones. The Broncos lost their top reserve safety when P.J. Locke signed as a free agent last March with Dallas, and Rapp could fill that void.

Also in the mix to be Denver’s third safety have been Devon Key and JL Skinner.

Rapp was a starter and had a career-high four interceptions in the 2021 season for the Rams, who won the Super Bowl. He has 12 career interceptions.

Rapp started the first six games in 2025 for the Bills before being lost for the season with a knee injury. He then was released by the Bills in March.

Bailey, who joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2024, was competing to be their top reserve inside linebacker behind starters Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad. Continuing to battle for the spot are second-year men Karene Reid and Jordan Turner and rookies Red Murdock and Taurean York.

Unlike with defensive lineman Matt Henningsen and center Michael Deiter earlier this month, the Broncos did not put Bailey on season-ending injured reserve. If he clears waivers, he would go on Denver’s injured reserve list. If there ends up being an injury settlement, he could play again this season for another team or could potentially even return to the Broncos after being away from the team for a number of weeks.

The Broncos on Friday will host Green Bay at Empower Field in their second preseason game.
