Broncos preseason Week 2: 3 things to watch against Green Bay Packers

Broncos football returns to Empower Field.

Denver hosts the Green Bay Packers at 7 p.m. Friday in its second preseason game. The Broncos defeated the Falcons, 27-7, last week in Atlanta. Here are three things to watch between the Broncos and Packers.

Nix returns

Welcome back, Bo Nix.

The starting Broncos quarterback will take his first live snaps Friday night since fracturing his ankle in the divisional round playoff win over the Bills. Nix missed OTAs and was limited in minicamp. But the third-year QB is now at full health in training camp.

Nix didn’t play in the preseason opener in Atlanta. A good decision on artificial turf. But it’s time to see if his mobility has returned in real game action. Expect one or two offensive series with Nix and the starters on Friday night.

Love fest

Packers coach Matt LaFleur told reporters in Green Bay that quarterback Jordan Love and some other starters will play in Denver. Love has more than 3,000 yards passing in three consecutive seasons. He is one of the better young quarterbacks in the NFL.

The Broncos are familiar with Love. He threw for 276 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a Broncos win last season, 34-26, at Empower Field.

It is likely Love and some Packers starters will play one or two series for Green Bay.

Return game

It does not seem likely that wide receiver Marvin Mims will play.

He spent most of practice last week on the side field working out during team periods. Mims pulled up on a route earlier in training camp and appeared to strain a muscle. It does not appear to be a long-term issue.

But his absence gives more opportunities for young return specialists. Cornerback Sean Fresch Jr., wide receiver Kolbe Katsis and wide receiver Cameron Ross have all shown promise. A big return against Green Bay might help solidify a roster spot.

Welcome Back.
