Officials acknowledge ‘Califorina’ Street snafu in downtown Denver
There were voices down the corridor, and I thought I heard them say: “Welcome to the Hotel Califorina?”
A misspelled street sign in downtown Denver caught a lot of attention Tuesday after a Reddit post called out the error. The sign, located at California and 19th Streets, misspelled California as “Califorina.”
Mayor Mike Johnston poked fun at the error in a Facebook post, in which he said Denver will “leave the spell check on” for the next time. Johnston also said the sign will be fixed quickly; the sign was already removed as of Wednesday morning.
Department of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Cyndi Karvaski said the sign was made and installed by a contractor. She said the sign, which cost $321.75, will be replaced by the end of the week at no cost to the city.
Comments on the Reddit thread also noted “lazily done” street signs, including 20th Street at Chestnut Place being listed as “20th Avenue” and Pecos Street at 52nd Street being listed as “Pecos Avenue.”
DOTI officials did not respond to questions about the other misprinted signs.
Another comment poked fun at the misspelling using the lyrics to 2Pac’s “California Love.”
“Califorina,” the comment read, “knows how to parity.”
