Man sentenced to community corrections for explosive that injured Pueblo officers
A Pueblo County judge sentenced Clay Nimmo, 48, to two years in community corrections on Wednesday after an explosive device he possessed “significantly” injured two officers, according to a news release by the 10th Judicial District.
Nimmo pleaded guilty to possessing the device, a class 5 felony, after Pueblo County sheriff’s deputies recovered a metal cylindrical device with yellow wires protruding from it during a traffic stop on Jan. 30.
On Feb. 12, the device detonated while members of the Pueblo bomb squad were collecting the device from evidence, injuring the officers.
District Attorney Kala Beauvais was left unable to pursue charges caused by the explosion against Nimmo because she did not believe there was reasonable doubt he intended to injure the Pueblo police officers.
“The District Attorney’s Office was saddened to learn of the injuries sustained by the officers,” Beauvais stated in the release. “Nevertheless, we remain legally and ethically obligated to pursue only those charges that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Deputies also allegedly recovered drugs, including fentanyl, from Nimmo’s vehicle, but his plea deal dropped the misdemeanor possession charge he faced.
