Fire on Raton Mesa reaches 4k acres, closing parts of Fishers Peak State Park
Firefighters battling four blazes in Las Animas County managed to reach some containment as the blazes continued to expand on Thursday.
Nearly all of the acreage burning in the county is from the Post fire on top of the Raton Mesa, which reached 4,213 acres with 25% containment on Thursday.
The growth of the fire forced Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials to close some trails within Fishers Peak State Park, the agency posted on social media.
Those include the Stone Guard, Peak Approach and Summit Loop trails. No other trails are impacted, and a new trail set to open on Saturday is still going ahead as scheduled pending changing conditions, according to CPW.
Within the park, the fire is on the publicly inaccessible southern side and has not reached the peak.
Numerous local and state firefighting resources have been committed to the Post fire and to three other fires burning in the county around 50 miles to the east.
Members of the Kim Area Volunteer Fire Department are among numerous firefighters combating the 30%-contained, 712-acre Sheep Pen fire that began on Wednesday 12 miles southeast of the town.
The department also credited several people on social media Thursday with using their own equipment to extinguish several flare-ups west of Kim late Wednesday.
To the southwest of Kim, the High Fence and Gotera fires expanded their perimeters to 121 and 23 acres, respectively, with no reported containment after also igniting on Wednesday.
All four of the county’s named fires occurred naturally amid strong thunderstorms in the region.
