Colorado corrections employee arrested on sexual exploitation of a child, weapons charges

A Trinidad man was arrested on Thursday after nearly a yearlong investigation into his alleged internet crimes against children, according to a news release by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Gage Vidal Montoya, 37, of Trinidad, was charged with six counts of sexual exploitation of a child and three counts of possessing a dangerous weapon. He is employed as a corrections officer with the Colorado Department of Corrections, although no evidence suggests he engaged in criminal activity at work.

Following his arrest, CDOC placed Montoya on administrative leave.

“An internal review will be conducted, and in accordance with State Personnel Rules, CDOC will take appropriate administrative action as necessary,” CDOC Executive Director Andre Stancil stated in the release.

CBI began its investigation into Montoya’s alleged crimes by following a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in September.
