4 new Las Animas County fires expand to over 2,800 acres
A fire several miles southeast of Trinidad on top of the Raton Mesa expanded to 2,431 acres overnight and was joined by three more blazes in the county on Wednesday.
The Post fire was discovered at 1,000 acres a few miles east of Interstate 25 in the southern Las Animas County after igniting naturally on Tuesday evening, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
Two air tankers were on scene, while one crew from the state Division of Fire Prevention and Control and another from the Stonewall Fire Protection District were on the way, according to federal dispatch data. A brief update by officials on Wednesday morning indicated multiple agencies were working the fire.
Over 50 miles east, the High Fence fire and Sheep Pen fire burned 30 and 400 acres, respectively, after also starting naturally by 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Around 6 p.m., crews conducting a smoke check confirmed another fire had begun in the county several miles from the High Fence fire. The Gotera fire was reportedly 10 acres, according to federal dispatch data.
All three of the new starts are in the southeastern part of Las Animas County within 10 miles of the Colorado-New Mexico border. The Sheep Pen fire remains the closest to the town of Kim, as it burns around 12 miles to the southeast.
There, the Kim Area Volunteer Fire Department was working the fire alongside engine crews from the DFPC and South Fork, federal dispatch data shows.
None of the four fires has any reported containment.
