Aspen Acres fire containment remains steady entering blaze’s seventh week
Around 130 firefighters continued to battle the 102,003-acre Aspen Acres fire on Monday as crews maintained around 70% containment 42 days after it ignited.
Crews minimized growth of the seventh-largest fire in state history to 800 acres in its sixth week, allowing over 300 firefighters to depart and all remaining evacuation and pre-evacuation orders to be lifted.
It is a stark contrast from July, when at least 1,000 firefighters from across the country worked on the fire for 20 consecutive days amid numerous evacuation and pre-evacuation orders in Custer, Fremont, Huerfano and Pueblo counties.
The response peaked at 1,934 firefighters on July 12, and the last three pre-evacuation orders were lifted on Friday.
The dozens still battling the fire are working on indirect containment lines and structure protection near Lake Isabel, according to a Monday morning update by Wyoming Type 3 Incident Management Team 5, which is running the operation now.
Incident command remains focused on suppression repair by restoring fire lines, which they anticipate to complete by next week.
They will be working in warm temperatures and thunderstorms with gusty winds that are forecast in the fire area this week.
In Monday’s update, incident command emphasized that a temporary flight restriction remains in place above the fire area for all unauthorized aircraft, including drones.
