Suspect fires at Pueblo officers during high-speed chase
Pueblo police arrested a suspect they say fled from and shot at officers while driving a stolen vehicle.
Adonis Ortiz-Lopez, 28, faces two counts of attempted first-degree homicide, motor vehicle theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and felony eluding, police said in a news release.
Officers were near East First Street and Norwood Avenue at 1:07 a.m. Friday when they spotted a stolen Hyundai Accent, which triggered alerts from automated license plate reader cameras earlier in the night.
Ortiz-Lopez fled from officers by reversing at a high rate of speed before losing control and blowing out a tire, according to the release.
He continued driving through residential areas despite the damage to the tire and fired several shots at officers, hitting a marked police vehicle and an unoccupied parked car, police said.
Officers used a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) to stop the vehicle near East Fourth Street and Erie Avenue, and they recovered a gun at the scene.
Ortiz-Lopez was taken to the hospital after his arrest because he told officers he “ingested a small bag containing narcotics” and was visibly sweaty, police said.
He had outstanding warrants “primarily related” to motor vehicle theft and drug offenses, according to police.
