Salmonella outbreak with large number of Colorado cases linked to Chipotle, Qdoba

Health officials across the country are investigating a salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeño peppers sold at Chipotle and Qdoba restaurants.

While the Centers for Disease Control have identified 27 states linked to the outbreak, the most cases have been confirmed in Colorado and Minnesota, according to the Associated Press. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said more than 250 salmonella cases were reported in the state during the month of July, well over the average of 125 cases Colorado typically sees during July.

Epidemiologic and traceback data showed the contaminated jalapeños came from Sinaloa, Mexico, and were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.

Across the country, 345 cases have been confirmed with 36 hospitalizations, according to the CDC. The illnesses began on July 19 and July 20.

Chipotle on Wednesday released a statement in which the restaurant chain said all jalapeños at affected restaurants have since been replaced by peppers from a different distributor. Qdoba also said it has removed all jalapeños from its restaurants.

The CDC and FDA said it does not consider there to be an active risk of salmonella given that both restaurants stopped serving the affected jalapeños.
