WR Jaylen Waddle exits practice with ‘muscle tightness’ | Broncos training camp Day 7
ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Wednesday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.
Play of the day
Cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine was the first player to intercept quarterback Bo Nix in a team period at training camp. Nix targeted wide receiver Marvin Mims on a comeback route down the sideline. Abrams-Draine jumped in front of the pass for the hard-fought pick. The Broncos are deep at cornerback with Abrams-Draine and Jahdae Barron playing reserve roles.
Position battle
Backup quarterback: Sam Ehlinger and Jarrett Stidham are rotating as the backup quarterback. Ehlinger led the second-team offense Wednesday after Stidham was QB No. 2 on Tuesday. Coach Sean Payton has downplayed a position battle. But it’s impossible to ignore Ehlinger’s slow rise on the depth chart. He could challenge Stidham as the backup quarterback.
Stock rising
WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey: The veteran wide receiver has been a favorite target for all three quarterbacks in training camp. It’s no surprise when you consider Humphrey’s veteran savvy and established trust with coach Sean Payton. Humphrey is the best blocking wide receiver in Denver with the versatility to play all three wide receiver spots. It’s showing up in practice.
Stock falling
Tight ends: It was a quiet day from Evan Engram, Adam Trautman and the entire tight ends group. The majority of passes were targeted to wide receivers. It remains to be seen if Engram will fulfill his potential with the Broncos now that Davis Webb has taken over as offensive coordinator and play-caller. There is plenty of training camp left to determine that impact.
Attendance check
The following players viewed practice but did not participate: OLB Nik Bonitto, WR Courtland Sutton, C Luke Wattenberg, CB Jaden Robinson and OLB Dasan McCullough.
Payton said that Sutton is expected to return to practice Thursday after consecutive veteran days for load management.
Tight end Caleb Lohner (knee) remains absent for the Broncos.
Injury report
Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle left practice during individual drills and did not return. Payton said: “We’ll evaluate him. I think he’s fine. He had some muscle tightness.”
Offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo is on the physically unable to perform list with a torn ACL. Inside linebacker Jordan Turner is on the non-football injury list with an undisclosed issue.
What’s next
Training camp continues with practice at 10 a.m. Thursday at Broncos Park.
