Medical personnel on standby for injured passengers diverted from Denver airport to Colorado Springs

Significant turbulence that forced the diversion of nearly 30 flights from Denver International Airport to the Colorado Springs Airport on Monday evening resulted in five passengers receiving medical attention, according to a news release by Colorado Springs city and airport officials.

Colorado Springs Fire Department personnel and additional emergency responders remained positioned at the airport in case more medical needs arose as flights continued to land.

Of those who received medical attention as of 8:45 p.m., one was taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition, according to the release.

A spokesperson for the Colorado Springs Airport told The Gazette around 9:30 p.m. that some flights had begun returning to Denver, although that was not necessarily an indication that no more flights would be diverted on Monday.

A Colorado Springs Airport spokesperson said nothing specific stood out as unique in Monday’s event because significantly turbulent flights are often inbound to the airport and sometimes have passengers that require medical attention.

The airport receives the most diverted flights from both United Airlines and Denver International Airport annually, according to the spokesperson.

Officials later said 22 planes were diverted to the Colorado Springs Airport and one person was hospitalized.
