Drugs, weapons found during traffic stop: Colorado Springs police
Colorado Springs police on Monday found a significant quantity of illegal drugs in a vehicle during a contentious traffic stop, law enforcement officials said.
The stop occurred at about 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and Early Sun Drive, south of Airport Road, when officers noticed that the vehicle’s temporary license plate was difficult to read, police said.
The male driver initially seemed reluctant to stop and refused to open his window more than a couple of inches, at which time the patrol officer called for backup. Police learned that the driver had a criminal history that included several weapons-related charges.
The driver began to exit the vehicle after repeated commands, but then started resisting, according to police. One officer announced that the man had a gun in his waistband.
The suspect briefly got away from the officers, running down the middle of Academy Boulevard, but didn’t get far before he was caught. He continued to resist until other officers arrived and put him in handcuffs.
The suspect, identified as Victor Carter, had a stolen gun tucked in his belt and a second gun in the vehicle, where officers also found a “large quantity of narcotics,” officials said.
Carter was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital before being booked at the El Paso County jail. He faces several felony and misdemeanor charges, including weapons and drug possession and assault on a peace officer, police said.
