22 planes diverted from Denver airport to Colorado Springs after weather, medical issues
Weather conditions in Denver caused 22 planes to be diverted to the Colorado Springs Airport late Monday night, according to officials.
The final diverted aircraft from Denver International Airport arrived at around 8 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from the Colorado Springs Airport. Two hours later, all of the planes had departed.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department also treated five passengers during the diversion event. One of them was transported to a local hospital, where they are in stable condition, according to the release.
Of the diverted aircraft, four were scheduled for international flights.
A 2024 report from Turbli, a turbulence forecasting website, found that four of the five bumpiest flight routes in the United States start or end in Denver, 9News out of Denver reported.
“We just happen to live in one of those areas, so we certainly have a lot of ingredients in the atmosphere around Denver International and the surrounding airports that can cause turbulence,” said Chad Kendall, a Metropolitan State University of Denver professor and a former commercial pilot, in a 2024 interview with 9News, a news partner with The Denver Gazette.
