1 dead, 3 injured after ‘incident’ upon family boat at Monument Lake Resort

A deceased man’s body was recovered following an hours-long search for a missing person after a ‘single boat incident’ at the Monument Lake Resort in Las Animas County, according to a news release by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The victim’s three other family members on the pontoon were hospitalized in Trinidad, and no details were provided on what may have caused the incident. The three adults and one child were above 17 feet of 68-degree water at the time of the incident.

Officers from Trinidad Lake State Park, over 20 miles southeast of the resort, were dispatched shortly after 10 a.m. to a possible drowning and were on the water by 11:15 a.m. to search for the missing boater, according to CPW.

A CPW evidence recovery team with a sonar-equipped boat joined the search around 3:15 p.m. The missing man was ultimately recovered two hours later.

Parks and Wildlife was leading the response to the privately owned resort alongside the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The identity of the man and his cause and manner of death will be released by the Las Animas County Coroner’s Office at an unspecified time in the future. The victim’s next of kin have been notified, according to CPW.

In its release, CPW advises visitors to “recreate responsibly around water, remain aware of changing conditions and make safety a priority at all times.”

The 368-acre resort is along Colorado 12 west of Trinidad and about 140 miles southwest of Colorado Springs. It has history dating back to 1937, when the land was cleared and a dam was constructed, according to the Monument Lake Resort website.
