Kickin’ It with Kiz: Is CU’s JuJu Lewis a QB controversy waiting to happen?

For the Colorado Buffaloes, it’s the season of quarterback JuJu Lewis, correct? Would he be the first CU player that could be considered a Deion Sanders creation? I don’t think it’s going to be a good season for the Buffs.

— Greg, bracing for the worst

Kiz: Not to go all birds and bees on you, but I think it’s probably technically correct to call Shedeur Sanders a creation of Coach Prime. With the upcoming CU football season feeling like it’s make-or-break for Prime, a heavy responsibility will rest on the shoulders of Lewis, a teenager who doesn’t celebrate his 19th birthday until late September. With so much weight on the slender shoulders of Lewis, it might be wise to keep an eye on transfer Isaac Wilson, who is the kid brother of NFL quarterback Zach. One of the first signs of trouble in Boulder this fall would be a quarterback controversy.

The CU football team is going to travel to Fountain-Fort Carson High School to open preseason camp. What’s your take on that, Kiz?

— J.C., coaching ’em up

Kiz: Hold on and let me check a couple things. Do the Buffs reside on one of the most beautiful campuses in all of America? Check. Are the training facilities and dining room at CU top-notch? Check. So Sanders is going to pack up his entire football team and all its equipment, then roll down the highway to the far side of Colorado Springs and open their training camp at a high school? Wait … what? Seems to be a waste of time, money and energy. Maybe Sanders is trying to create a sense of urgency with a Last Chance U vibe. Hope he gets some viral video clips out of it, because I’m not sure this stunt will add any W’s to the Buffs’ record.

A $50 million salary for Broncos quarterback Bo Nix? No one should get that kind of money for playing a game. It is an endeavor that’s not in any way helping humanity. Our priorities are screwed up. Healthcare workers, police and firemen should get higher salaries, not mediocre quarterbacks.

— G.R., it ain’t fair

Kiz: Well, ain’t that America? Football is wine and circus for the masses. We’d rather sit back and be entertained than roll up our sleeves to do the hard work.

A $50 million salary for a quarterback is called freedom, man. It’s whatever the market will bear. I’m sure healthcare workers, police and firemen enjoy watching and cheering their favorite sports teams without thinking about their salaries.

— R-man, fan of football and free markets

Kiz: OK, one thing that does make football valuable is how it can make a community stand up and cheer as neighbors at a time when it’s so very easy to be lost and alone in our cellphones.

And today’s parting shot reveals the bottom-line ramification of the Broncos enjoying a new $175 million training facility.

Get ready to pay more for tickets to Broncos games.
