The court case of a man accused of fatally stabbing another man two years ago has been postponed to allow a more comprehensive evaluation of the defendant.

Rocky West, 33, is facing first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing Isaiah Curtis Plair, 25, at Springs Rescue Mission in 2024. On Monday his review hearing was postponed to Nov. 2.

Addressing Plair’s family members in the courtroom, Judge Sherri Gryboski said the delay, while clearly frustrating, was necessary.

“(Nov. 2) seems really far away for a case that’s been around a long time,”  Gryboski said.

“I sympathize, certainly, with the fact that we’re not really any closer to resolving the case for anybody at this point. Hopefully when we come back, we will have what we need.”

On July 28, 2024, Colorado Springs police responded to a call about a stabbing at Springs Rescue Mission, 5 W. Las Vegas St., south of downtown. When they arrived, they found a man, later identified as Plair, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Plair was pronounced dead at the scene.

West, who was reportedly listed as a registered client of the shelter, was apprehended by security guards and turned over to arriving officers, according to earlier Gazette reporting.

One witness told police the attack resembled a “prison-style shanking,” with West allegedly stabbing Plair more than a dozen times with a four-inch folding knife, according to arrest records.

A security guard told police that he saw West walking down a hallway shirtless with what appeared to be blood on his right hand and forearm, and he stated that he did not do ‘it’ after being asked what happened. 

The detective in the affidavit stated that West appeared to have blood on his hands, shoes and pants when he was arrested.

The fatal stabbing was the first murder at Springs Rescue Mission since the shelter opened in 1996.
