Popes Valley Drive closed due to road deterioration: Colorado Springs police

Popes Valley Drive has been closed in both directions due to road deterioration caused by recent rainfall, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The roadway, located north of Garden of the Gods Road and west of Interstate 25, was declared unsafe on Sunday after police received a call from a passerby who said that parts of westbound Popes Valley Drive was crumbling.

Arriving officers saw that sections of the asphalt had washed into the creek bed, officials said. The city of Colorado Springs Street Department assessed the damage and determined that the roadway should be shut down until repairs could be made.

Officials could not estimate a timeline for the road repairs as of Sunday afternoon.
