Jonas Fjeldberg’s late goal lifts Switchbacks to thrilling win over visiting Charleston Battery
“We don’t listen to words, we listen to actions,” Switchbacks coach Alan McCann said of his team’s resilience on Saturday night.
Forward Jonas Fjeldberg had the biggest action of them all.
Midfielder Steven Echevarria sent in a cross and found Fjeldberg on the back side, who sent his header past Charleston Battery keeper Luis Zamudio in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time for the go-ahead goal in a 2-1 win for the Switchbacks at Weidner Field.
“I know as soon as they score right before I come in it’s going to be a tough defensive game because they’re a really good team,” Fjeldberg said. “Don’t have a lot of the ball at least personally and then Talen (Maples) tells me right before the goal that your moment is going to come and he tends to be right about things. I just believed that the chance is going to be there and I just had to be in the right spot at the right time and Stevie whips a ball in that I’ve never seen him whip a ball in like before and I just have to get my head on it.”
The moment sent all of Weidner Field into a frenzy, including McCann who immediately embraced Club President Brad Estes and Vice President and General Manager of Weidner Field Joel Currey in celebration.
Saturday’s win moved the Switchbacks (7-5-4) to third place in the USL Championship Western Conference standings. It marks the team’s fourth straight victory across all competitions and completes a two-win, six-point week for Colorado Springs. But beyond the stats and standings, that moment highlights the team’s commitment to a “never say die” attitude and was about celebrating the hard work of every member of the organization to push through uncomfortable times in order to improve, team and back office included.
“We are being what we said we wanted to be and it’s showing up in tough moments. That’s something I’ll be forever proud of,” McCann said. “Part of the world we’re from that’s something that’s ingrained in you but we know we’ve got people in this locker that they’ve gone through the same. We know we’ve got people in that back office, we know we’ve got people in ownership, that’s why I went to those guys. You can’t miss Brad’s big hat. That was a big one. In that moment, they’re in it just as much as we are.”
Charleston and Colorado Springs entered play on Saturday as the two highest-scoring teams in the USL Championship, but neither club scored in the opening 45 minutes despite the usual strong effort from Colorado Springs, which possessed the ball nearly two-thirds of the half and led in shots.
Switchbacks forward Adrien Perez scored his third goal in three regular-season games to give Colorado Springs the lead in the 56th minute. Forward Juan Tejada put a shot on goal that was saved by Zamudio, but Perez collected the rebound and put it in for the score.
But Charleston wasn’t going home without a fight. Wilmer Cabrera scored the equalizer for the visitors with a shot in from inside the 18-yard box in the 81st minute.
It would have been easy to settle for a draw in that moment, but instead, the Switchbacks went back on the attack and were rewarded for the effort.
“It’s one of the non-negotiables that Al has put into this team that we never give up. You see it time and time again in soccer that games are never over,” Fjeldberg said. “We’re under pressure there, but we know we’ve got game winners on both sides of the field in our defense and our attack. If you’re caught out there not trying to win the game, Al is going to take you off right away, which is something that has been so ingrained in this group now, we’ll never stop believing that we can go and grab a winner.”
After a busy week, Colorado Springs will spend the next two weekends on the road, first traveling to rival New Mexico United.
