I scream, you scream: Top spots for frozen treats in Colorado Springs
In this weekly feature, we’re celebrating the best of Colorado Springs’ food and drink scene ー as determined by voters in the 2026 Best of the Springs (thebestofthesprings.com). We’ll throw in our own recommendation, too.
Up this week: Ice cream.
Gold: Josh & John’s Ice Cream
Colorado Springs’ biggest name in ice cream is celebrating its 40th year with its first drive-through, located on Garden of the Gods Road. Now lovers of Purple Mountain Majesty, Malted Mazel Toff and Moose on the Loose can get their scoops faster than ever. Not that they ever minded waiting in line at neighborhood shops for those flavors and much more. Multiple locations
Silver: BJ’s Velvet Freeze
People and cars wrap around the window of this nostalgic haven. Since 1954, BJ’s has put a messy smile on the faces of kids and parents who feel like kids again. They pick from dipped cones, banana splits, shakes and malts at prices that also recall yesteryear. 1511 N. Union Blvd., 2900 E. Platte Ave.

Bronze: Rizuto’s Ice Cream
A second location recently opened on the city’s southeast side. The goal: to make memories there as they’ve been made on the north side, where Chip Rizuto generously debuted his homemade ice cream in 2005. When we say generous, we mean it: These are the biggest soft serve cones you’ll find around. 4785 Barnes Road; 2050 Jet Wing Drive

Our recommendation: Colorado City Creamery
Walking traffic in Old Colorado City has flowed into this Victorian hut since 1979. Locals and tourists alike proceed to the sundae bar, where they apply their own hot fudge or caramel and other toppings. Don’t leave without a hot dog; it’s not everywhere you find Vienna Beef. 2602 W. Colorado Ave.
