Several injured in 2 separate DUI crashes: Colorado Springs police
Several people were injured early Sunday in two separate crashes involving suspected drunken drivers, according to Colorado Springs police.
At about 12:25 a.m., officers responded to a call about a collision involving injuries near Airport Road and South Academy Boulevard.
When they arrived, they found two vehicles, each with injured occupants inside. All four occupants were taken to a hospital. The drivers of both vehicles sustained serious injuries, but are expected to survive, police said.
Investigators determined that a Subaru Outback, heading north on Marjorie Lee Way, was turning left onto westbound Airport Road when it was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta that ran a red light, according to police.
Two other passengers in the Jetta reportedly fled the scene and were later found at a nearby business, police said. They were both taken to the hospital for “non-life threatening injuries.”
No arrests were announced in connection with the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
At about 3 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 5200 block of Ferrari Drive, east of Powers Boulevard and south of Stetson Hills Boulevard.
Detectives from the Major Crash Team concluded that the vehicle had been going east on Jackpot Drive when it hit a deer, went airborne through an intersection and hit a curb, rolling at least once before making contact with a retaining wall at a private residence.
One passenger was taken to a hospital with possible life-threatening injuries. Two others were treated at the scene and released. The driver, whose name was not released, was believed to be driving under the influence, police said.
