North Cheyenne Cañon roads reopen after storm damage repaired
After nearly a month of road repairs, Colorado Springs is reopening the roads through North Cheyenne Cañon Park to vehicles.
Traffic is allowed back onto North Cheyenne Canyon Road beginning Wednesday, according to a city announcement, while Gold Camp Road will be reopened Thursday.
Both roads suffered from storm damage that swept through North Cheyenne Cañon Park on the evening of June 6. Up to 2 inches of rain fell in that section of Colorado Springs, collapsing the edge of one unpaved portion of Gold Camp Road and covering several other areas with scree and debris.
A city announcement said that crews had been working for weeks to clear and repair the affected areas, as well as install new roadside crossing markers and repair the stone retaining walls alongside the road.
“We want to thank our community for its patience and understanding while the City worked to safely reopen North Cheyenne Cañon Park,” Parks, Trails and Open Space Manager Scott Abbott said in a statement Wednesday.
The full return of vehicles will be interrupted on July 4 to control holiday visitors to North Cheyenne Cañon Park. City staff said Gold Camp Road will be closed to vehicles all day Saturday to manage crowds. Other vehicle traffic will be cut off at either 2 p.m. or when the park reaches full vehicle capacity.
